Iron Turkey 2011… Part II

The girls had a tough act to follow… but we were up to the challenge. Our drawn ingredients were: beef, potatoes, and ice cream.

Our kitchen wasn’t nearly as frantic as the boys yesterday. At one point the three of us were sitting on the couch and my dad asked, shouldn’t you be running around in the kitchen doing something?? Nope… we had it all under control.

Appetizer… Blue Cheese Bacon Stuffed Mushrooms.

Mom’s chosen dish… Parmesan Potato Pie.

Rachel with our main course, Julia Child’s Beef Bourguignon. This recipe was intensive but we took it one step at a time and it turned out SO good!!

We needed a green veggie… nothing special, green beans sautéed with garlic and topped with Parmesan cheese.

Then there was dessert, Rachel and I were thrilled to find the recipe online for our all time FAVORITE dessert… Bogart’s Butterscotch Brownies with Captain Morgan’s Rum Sauce. (We used to eat this all the time when we were in college… the restaurant closed this year and the recipe surfaced.)

THE RESULTS

Although the boys did a great job, we pulled off a matching menu and couldn’t declare a winner. HOWEVER, Rachel and Brian’s neighbor Dave came over last night and ate dinner because we had so much food, so we called him again tonight to come eat to declare a winner.

He attempted to declare a “tie” but we had to inform him that Slivenskys don’t do “ties”… we are in it for winners and losers… he had to choose. And so he did.

He declared the guys as winners for the Iron Turkey 2011. While our dessert and potato dish were better than the boys choices, he thought the stuffed pork loin was better than the beef. The girls were okay with that, we knew the guys had done great! So congratulations… we’ll be ready to compete again next year!

Here are the links to our best recipes…potato pie (click HERE), butterscotch brownies (click HERE) and beef bourguignon will be coming later when I have some time to edit the LONG recipe… Julia Child was a bit too wordy for me!!

So… what did we do with the kiddos while we were cooking and eating? The opposite team is in charge of entertainment and dinner then they eat popcorn and enjoy a movie. (Lucas was stuck with the adults at the table because he tends to get in a little trouble.)

We indeed enjoyed two nights of great food and memories. What fun we’ll have in the years ahead when the kids can do it with us. Good thing we managed to keep our boy/girl numbers equal!! :)
