The Great Slivensky Weekend (Guest Post)

Since Anna has taken an unapproved leave of absence from blogging, I thought I'd step in and help hold you over until the end of the month. I'm not as eloquent with words as my sister, but I'll do my best.

It's a long weekend, so what better time for a family adventure! I needed a new sink and IKEA just happened to be having a free food with purchase weekend, so it was off to IKEA we went. We figured out this food deal years ago (and we're actually pretty certain they changed it because they lost money on us the first go round), so we sampled pretty much everything on the menu!

This is just the adult food table...

We took a brief walk through the showroom, although you can't tell by this picture...

Our trip was cut a little short by Isaac getting sick (not from all the food we ate, he started feeling bad on the trip down). But we still managed to fill the truck with all kinds of goodies.

Our Sunday morning adventure started bright and early and with SNOW!! The kids were so excited as we headed up the mountain to Jonas Ridge Tubing Park. The boys and I went with Oma & Opa last year, but this was a first for the girls.

Photos before the fun

Tubing time! The big kids were allowed to be on their own so we saw very little of them while we were there. They were busy off on their own!

The little kids hung out with Anna & I...and they wore us plum out!

Little Munchkin

Riding the conveyor belt back to the top of the hill. This is the ONLY way to tube!

Kayla & her buddy. He helped her off of the conveyor belt and would lift her way up high. Her face lit up every time we got close to the top and she saw him. She even asked him to ride down the mountain in a tube with her!

The kids were just as tuckered out as Anna & I by the time we got done with our two hour tubing window.

We wrapped up our adventure with lunch at Judge's in Morganton before heading back to Hickory to nap and play for the rest of the day.

I love our family adventures and these kids love to go as much as we do. So stay tuned, Anna will be back from her hiatus soon and you'll be back in the loop. There's no telling what we'll be up to next!

A Temporary Farewell

Some of you know that my friend Beth and I read the Jen Hatmaker book "7" back in September and have since been on our own "mutiny against excess journey" for 3 months now. If you have no idea what I am talking about and want to read how it started, click HERE.

So, we've eaten only 7 foods for an entire month. Worn only 7 articles of clothing for a whole month. Given away 7 possessions every day for an entire month.... now what?!

Tomorrow starts month 4, MEDIA.

Most of you know that my family is pretty stone age when it comes to this item anyway, but that almost makes it harder because the technology I do use is getting cut or limited BIG TIME. Tonight I am finishing up my own guidelines for the month, but they all revolve around cutting the use of 7 types of media. (That includes Facebook and this blog.) And as I am tweaking the list I keep reminding myself, this journey is not about following the "rules" but instead creating space for Jesus to move and show me more of Him. And trust me, there is plenty of space that I need to give over to Him in this area. So it should be an interesting month; a growing month.

On that note, to all of you who follow our adventures in some format or another... we'll still be playing hard... but just off the radar a bit.

See you on the flip side.

When You Gotta Go...

Madeline ran off the school bus today and left little sister with the book bags, she had to pee! As you can see, Audrey was none to pleased, but she carried them anyways. Look at that face!!

When you gotta go, you gotta go!

Playing Hooky

We have a pediatric dentist waaaaay up on the other side of Wilmington that is phenomenal and that we love, and since Madeline is my girl with crazy teeth we drive almost an hour twice a year for appointments. January and July. Today was our first trip with all three girls having appointments because it was Kayla's first dentist visit.

At the dentist everyone did great!!

This one was a bit nervous, but Dr. Halle was great and she warmed right up!

And these two are old pros by now!

Another visit being part of the "No Cavity Club" for everyone! Hooray!! And when you finish dentist appointments at 11am and still have an hour drive to get the kiddos back to school, is it really worth it!?! Nope! We played hooky today and had a blast.

A friend of mine's older daughter who is home schooled came with us so I would have some back up if needed at the dentist, so the girls loved having someone BIG to play with all day, other than me of course!

Lunch out at Sam's... pretzels, hot dogs, and icees for 5... All under $15?! Yes, please!!

Then off to the Children's Museum!

I had these girls WORN out!

It was a nice midweek day of fun with the girls but unfortunately I have to send them back to school tomorrow.

Genes or Jeans

My parents met in college, both pursuing art degrees. They went on to have two kids, one who would graduate with a chemistry degree, the other biology. Hmmmmm....

We know there is art talent hidden somewhere in our genes, so when projects like this come home from school, we aren't too surprised...

But then Madeline tells Audrey that the skills are "in her pants." And we realize that SHE indeed will not be our little geneticist! (Genes...jeans...pants. Just helping all you Madelines along out there.)

It is so fun watching them develop their talents and skills... and laugh at the silly moments between!

Back to School

And in the blink of an eye, today the two big kids were back to school.

Where did our two week break go?! Both of mine were ready to head back to school, but Kayla and I were sad to see them go. We have had the BEST break... and I do miss them when they are at school.

But Kayla and I grocery shopped, cleaned house, and did laundry... so the day went fast.

And in no time, the dining room table was full of homework and school again!

How many days until Spring Break?!

The Final Chapter to the Adoption Story

It has been quite some time since I blogged about the adoption, so here is the final chapter.

Back on October 1st, I blogged THIS adoption update as we submitted all our paperwork to the lawyer for finalizing. We assumed at that point, because things were in order that it would all process quickly and we would be adopting in early November.

But then we got word only 3 weeks later that there was an error on one of the more important documents and it had to be sent off for new signatures. Unfortunately, the error wasn't on our end of things, otherwise it could have been corrected immediately. So, as frustrating as it was. I threw my hands in the air and said, "Okay, God. I get it. It's all in your timing."

And so we waited. Some days impatiently. You all waited too. During the month of November I especially dreaded running into people or talking on the phone, even to close friends and family. That sounds awful to say, but EVERYONE wanted an update, and I had NOTHING to share. Some of you were so kind to not bring it up because you knew my struggle, but the looming cloud was always there. But again, God was teaching me that HIS timing is always perfect. I knew that and I claimed it, but the days were still long. I found myself reciting the verse below numerous times a day...

Psalm 130:5- I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope.

And so the wait continued. The day before Thanksgiving we got a call from the lawyer that they had just received the new correct papers back and we should come in and sign everything on November 30th! Another step closer, talk about something to be thankful for!!

Once we signed our stacks of papers, guess what we got to do then?!? Yup, you guessed it. Wait some more. The week before Christmas I got a text from our social worker that said "Clerk of court says things are in order, will have this DONE by Christmas." While our hopes were up, you just never know until things actually happen. We left to go out of town on Friday, December 18th knowing there were only two more court days that this could happen before Christmas. Monday, the 21st or Tuesday, the 22nd. We were out of town for both, but our social worker would be in touch if she heard anything. I won't lie, I was doubtful.

We were at Mark's parents house celebrating an early Christmas and I happened to be in the right location (my cell service is awful there) to get a voice message from our social worker at about 3:30pm on that Monday that said "call me." When I got a hold of her, she had the news! Our decree had been issued. Kayla was officially a BLEVINS!

Although the wait was LONG and I would have rather had it all done back in November, God used the timing of things to remind me that He has been in charge from the beginning.

This paragraph below is an excerpt from a blog I wrote back in May:

I remember around our early November court date praying that God would somehow find a way to send her back home to her family before the holidays. Don’t get me wrong, her leaving would be a hard thing to bear but I still had a layer of protection I hadn’t quite taken off my heart yet. But if she was with us for all these special moments and traditions that occur in our family—I wasn’t sure my heart would ever recover from the heartache that would come when she did one day leave. But God didn’t send her back home.

I think this is just another amazing piece of the story, I was preparing for the heart wrenching worst at the beginning of 2015 but God knew she was already home. And THIS year, days before Christmas, He made sure that this sweet girl was HOME!

Then on Christmas Eve, the LAST day we could get a mail delivery before Christmas, I opened the mailbox to find this sitting all alone. THIS was all I wanted for Christmas this year! God is so AMAZING!!

What a gift for Christmas. I am fairly certain nothing will ever top this year's excitement and joy as we gathered together as a family at home on Christmas morning knowing that sweet Little Heart-- was home forever.

For those of you who have been with us since before our move to Brunswick County-- back when we felt very called to move here although we had NO clue as to why--- I think we finally got our why! It sure has built our faith knowing that our God isn't one of coincidence and He planned all along to bring us here for this sweet little girl. Saying YES to the unknown has been SCARY... but God keeps pouring out His blessings as we walk obediently down His path for us. He has taken away things we thought we wanted and couldn't live without and don't get me wrong, we have taken our share of side trips and detours -- but HE IS FAITHFUL!

So now what?! Well, another chapter in our story is written and 2016 is already upon us, but we aren't really sure what is next. I assumed back in April when we decided to pursue adoption, that we would no longer do foster care after all was said and done with baby #3. Yet, we still feel very called to be a part of that and we are simply being open to where God might call us to invest next. Number one thing I have learned in the last five years... NEVER SAY NEVER!

And so I leave you this sweet picture...

December 21, 2015
592 days after this precious girl came into our lives was the day we welcomed sweet Kayla Hope home forever.

Thanks for being a part of our story, of her story, and continuing to pray for all of us as we see what God has in store for us next. We are SO blessed to be surrounded by such a supportive community near and far. And as always, if God has it on your heart to get involved in the foster to adopt program, we'd love to sit down and talk to you.

New Years' Eve 2015

We have kids, so let's face it, we always have a kid friendly New Years' Eve. UNTIL this year. Some good friends of ours asked if we wanted to go down to Myrtle and celebrate with just the adults and we said "sure, if we can get a babysitter." Aunt Rachel to the rescue. She had no plans, so she and the boys headed to the beach to ring in 2016 with the girls and we headed south for an adult evening out.

Don't get me wrong-- we had a lot of fun!

But THESE crazies had a BLAST!

Almost 48 hours later and they are still detoxing from the junk food/sugary/Aunt Rachel-knows-how to party event! Pretty sure they'll be begging us to leave again next year!!

Thanks Aunt Rachel-- you continue to win the award as BEST AUNT EVER!! My three worship the ground you walk on-- much like I have since the day we met. Love you big sister.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
